What is a Bleeding Disorder?

  • Bleeding disorders are disorders that can cause abnormal bleeding both inside and outside the body because of a problem with the body’s blood clotting process.
  • Bleeding disorders can be both acquired and inherited.

 

What are the symptoms of Bleeding Disorders?

  • Easy Bruising
  • Bleeding in the gums and mouth
  • Nosebleeds
  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
  • Blood in urine or stool
  • Extended bleeding after cuts, dental work, minor surgery, or bloodwork.
  • Redness, swelling, or pain in joints or muscles
  • Small red, purple, or brown spots on your skin

Causes of Bleeding Disorders

  • The majority of bleeding disorders are inherited and passed down through genes from your parents
  • Some disorders may develop because of other conditions, such as liver disease
  • Low count of red blood cells
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Certain Medications

How are Bleeding Disorders treated?

Treatment will differ depending on the disorder and its severity. Treatment cannot cure bleeding disorders, they can help relieve its symptoms. 

  • Iron Supplements if there is significant blood loss
  • Blood Transfusions
  • Factor Replacement Therapy to replace missing clotting factors and prevent/control excessive bleeding
  • Medication
